Confidentiality is never absolute. You have more privacy protection if don't use your health insurance. However, there are exceptions to confidentiality that you should be aware of.

The law applies some protection to the relationship between you and your therapist. Information about you cannot be released without your written consent.

The most common exceptions to the rule of confidentiality are:

  • If I suspect child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse, I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
  • If a client theatens to harm himself or herself, every effort will be made by me to work with them to ensure their safety. If they do not cooperate, I will take whatever measures are legal to ensure their safety without their permission.
  • Records may be subpoenaed by a court. The issuance of a subpoena does not automaticallly mean that your records will be released.

If you have any quesions about confidentiality, please let me know.
